Artist's Comments

Picture hastily done for a new Swedish RPG called Noir in the upcoming season this fall. Not strictly horror and macabre but it has strong elements of it. I won't say anything more than that I'm one of the lead artists on the project and it'll be real good stuff. This one's for a small promo- introduction for the magazine Fenix.

Technique used in this artwork: Watercolor - grayscale

****Edit:

Well wow, never thought this one would receive a DD =) At first I thought it weird that there seemed to be a lot more comments than yesterday and then the comments just continued to grow in number hehe.

Anyway, much as I'm surprised about receiving this DD I'm also grateful for all the comments and favs, I'll try to answer each and every one of them as soon as possible.

Thank you [link] for the feature and to all and everyone for the appreciation, it really means a lot =)****

LOVE the technique you used on this piece. You must be very proud to be able to work on something that cool. :) I've always wanted to work for a game-design place. Maybe someday that still might happen, but for now I'll just keep practicing. If its not too personal a question,.... how did you get the job (obviously you're very talented, so I'm refering to anything else one should do)? Any tips on getting in on jobs like this? Do they look for anything in particular? Sorry about all the questions, especially if you can't answer them. :)

Heh no it's not too personal a Q. Had it been a Q about how me and my wife get it on in the sack I might've thought it personal :) No worries, and as to how I got into the RPG- business ( Role Playing Game for the ones who don't know what I mean by RPG ) I tried it out with one of my friends back at school 16 years ago and we played the swedish equivalent of Dungeons and Dragons. I thought it pretty dull and uninteresting at the time since I had it all mixed up with some sort of new computer game that I thought we were going to play. Instead we sat down with bits of paper and pens and some dice, getting the characters took forever and when the game actually began it took too long for my taste. But I noticed that I liked the illustrations in the books and I also wanted to draw stuff like that, you know dragons, elves and dwarfs etc. So after having studied the pictures in the books for a little while I put together my own paltry little portfolio and sent it to the makers of the game asking for any crack at illustrating anything for them that I could get. Nothing happened for about a year and when I finally had given up on it my first official assignment dropped down in the letter box. I've been working my way from there after that. The ironic thing is that the friend who introduced RPG's to me back at school is now also the one I'm doing the above illustration for since Noir is his new little baby ( he's been into the business for as long as I have only on other levels ).

Just do what I did, pick up something that you'd like to work on, check up on the company behind it and put together a portfolio, either online, disc or paper and send it to them. Some companies like to see exactly what they're already publishing mind you so make sure to have something that could look like an actual piece designed for them and also include your own style of course in the other illustrations. Games Workshop for instance only want what they're already publishing so if you apply for any job for them you should make sure that you've understood the concept of their game world and produce illustrations specifically designed for their products. From what I've seen in your gallery here at deviantART I think you should be able to hold your own, if not at this moment then sometime very soon since you're doing good stuff in there. The rhino basking in the sun is my fav btw :) Lovely creature, the rhino.

Practise my friend, lots and lots of practise and after that more practise with an occasional paus for some more practise. Oh and a burning passion for what you do also helps and what you want to achieve. The way I see it there's only one obstacle to get to grips with in ones own progress and that's oneself.

 Yeah.. those are details of your life I'm really not interested in. ;)
Thank you VERY much for taking the time to give such a thorough reply. :) That really helps a lot. I'm familiar with RPG games, though I've never really played. I did enjoy the illustrations immensely. I was never quite sure what companies like that are looking for, so now I have an idea. My work in the gallery isn't really aimed at game-design in any form,...its more of the traditional stuff. I do sketch fantasy stuff on my own time though. Thank you for the compliments. I'm glad you like that Rhino. I think, currently, that's my favorite drawing. I put a lot of work into that one, so I really appreciate it. :)

btw i got a question, feel free to answer or not: as a lead artist for a computer game.. or anything else that has to do with media.... do you get paid well? :)

:) It's not a computer RPG, it's the real deal with pen, paper, books and dice but sometimes I make fairly well, at other times not as well. The RPG market as such here isn't that big as opposed to Games&Workshop fo instance. So it depends...
